SOME HISTORY
The Town of New
Lebanon, NY was created in 1818 by taking land from the Town of Canaan which had
been formed
in 1772 as Kings District. For almost a century (1818-1914), a student could
not receive an education above the Eighth Grade in the Town of New Lebanon.
The first school that included upper grades was built in 1913 and dedicated January 15, 1914 under
the name of the Union Free School. The National Register of Historic
Places calls it the Lebanon Springs Union Free School. Many graduates and
teachers of NLCS will remember it as the old elementary school beside the high
school (see
photo).
Ninth Grade classes were offered for the first time in the Autumn of that year
(presumably in September). Tenth and Eleventh Grade classes would have
been added in 1915 and 1916 respectively. There was no Twelfth Grade until
later. As a result, the first graduating class from the Union Free School
consisted of Eleventh Graders and occurred in 1917.
In August 1930,
the Union Free School became the New Lebanon Central School. The keynote
speaker at the dedication was Franklin Delano Roosevelt, then the governor of
New York State. He became the 32nd President of the United States in 1933
and served until his death in 1945.
In 1931, the
school transferred to a new building, and at that time a Twelfth Grade was
added. The expected graduation of Eleventh Graders in June 1931 did not
occur. Those students graduated as 12th graders in 1932 instead. In June 2017, New
Lebanon High School honored the 100th graduating class in the Town of New
Lebanon.
Graduating classes
from 1932-1951 were called "The Orange and Black". From 1952-2001, they
were called the "New Lebanon Indians". In 2002, they became the "New
Lebanon Tigers" (orange and black colors). [Source for this paragraph:

The main part of
this webpage
contains an
incomplete index of deceased graduates of New Lebanon High School,
Columbia County, NY. PLEASE inform me of
other graduates who have died (see email address below title above). Although not necessary, some information
about the person might allow me to find an obituary. Helpful information
would include when they died, where they died, married name of females, and year
of graduation. The name of the spouse or some children sometimes helps. Send me whatever you know.
In the main table
of deceased graduates,
the names are shown in order of the year of
graduation, but are arranged alphabetically within each year. When the
exact year could not be determined, an estimate was made, and the year is
preceded by c. which means circa or about. If you are looking for
people from a certain graduation class, be sure to look a couple years either
side of what you know to be the graduation year. Links to
the obituaries of about 85% of the known deceased graduates have been provided.

My Estimates
Obituaries often
give a person's age at their death rather than an actual date of birth.
Subtracting the age from the year of death will give an approximate year of
birth. To get an approximate year of graduation, I added 18 to the year of
birth.
Assistance
1)
Charles
John French (Class of 1967, co-editor of Sequax newsletter) has been immensely
helpful with this project. As of August 24, 2024, he had found 70 obituaries
of deceased graduates, and provided the year of graduation for over 70 others.
He has also provided some dates of
death, some places of burial, and some gravestone photos. Without his
continued help, I would not be able to determine the graduation year for each
graduate, and as a result I could not arrange the names according to their
class. An alphabetical arrangement would not work nearly as well.
Being able to look at your own class all in one place and quickly see which
classmates have passed on is made possible by him. In short, he makes it
possible for me to continuing working of this webpage.
2) Linda
Sullivan found over 40 obituaries that I didn't already have. And most
of them were for graduates who were new to the webpage. I was very
saddened to find her own obituary on 7/29/2021 (link).
She had died the day before. The obituary was accompanied by a very nice
photo. Her gravestone and that of her husband William can be seen
below.
3) In cases where I
could only estimate the year of graduation of a person, Michelle Bienes, New Lebanon Central School
District employee, provided me with exact dates for
some of my estimates. Those have been marked with an asterisk (*).
Sequax as part
of an entry below means that the information came from a Sequax newsletter (an
exceptional alumni resource).

is how you can help me find the right obituary when I locate obituaries for a
dozen people with the same name. For a woman, I

Mosher, Stewart Allen
--
[Published December 4, 2015 in the Times Union, Albany, NY]
Stewart A. Mosher: VA, POLICE PROBE VETERAN'S
DEATH
Albany
The military veteran who fell to his death at the Samuel S.
Stratton Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center Hospital was an enigmatic
ex-Marine who had been discharged from the hospital's psychiatric unit 90
minutes earlier, according to city police and those who knew him.
Stewart A. Mosher, 34, appeared to have jumped from the top
level of the parking garage on the VA campus just after noon on Nov. 27,
according to a police report obtained by the Times Union. Five people, including
a VA employee and a nurse from Albany Medical Center Hospital, witnessed Mosher
hit the pavement in front of 67 Veterans Way, police said.
Mosher lived in Selkirk and joined the Marine Corps right
after graduating from New Lebanon Junior-Senior High School in 2000. Four years
later, he was discharged with post-traumatic stress disorder, which he
self-medicated with "entheogens," or psychoactive drugs, he wrote on his
Facebook page. Emergency responders were called to the VA around 12:10 p.m. last
Friday and found Mosher unconscious and unresponsive, according to police.
The police report states Mosher left the VA's psychiatric
unit at 10:40 a.m. His apparent suicide highlighted the alarming issue of
suicide among military veterans. In the most extensive study on the issue, the
Department of Veterans Affairs estimated that 22 U.S. veterans took their own
lives each day from 1999 to 2010. Individuals 50 and older accounted for 69
percent of the suicides, the VA reported.
On Nov. 19, in a case tragically similar to what happened in
Albany, a military veteran seeking psychiatric treatment at a VA medical center
in Philadelphia walked out of its waiting room and jumped to his death from the
facility's parking garage.
Mosher's apparent suicide where area veterans receive
treatment also raised questions about the quality of care at the Stratton VA,
whose director, Linda W. Weiss, is on administrative leave for undisclosed
reasons. Citing privacy laws, the VA refused to address questions about Mosher's
admission into the Stratton hospital or his discharge. Mosher's family in East
Chatham had no public comment. But veterans following Mosher's case said they
were horrified to learn that a vet may have killed himself just after walking
out of the VA.
"It's absolutely horrible and very heartbreaking," said Gena
Hulse, 51, a Navy veteran from Gloversville who is being treated for PTSD at the
Albany VA. "Veterans are outraged. We were wondering if he was given thorough
enough care."
While Albany police continue to investigate Mosher's death,
the VA plans to review and provide a root-cause analysis of what happened,
Stratton VA spokesman Peter Potter said. In a statement, the VA extended its
condolences to Mosher's family and friends.
"Stratton VA Medical Center was saddened to learn of the loss
of a veteran in the local area," the VA said. The hospital said veterans and
loved ones could call a suicide prevention hot line 24 hours a day at (800)
273-TALK (8255). VA staff members who answer the phone can access veterans'
updated medical records. Joe Hunter, a suicide prevention coordinator at the
Stratton VA, can be reached at 626-5329.
Mosher was born in Saranac Lake, and most recently worked as
a detention counselor at Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth in Canaan
in 2011. He wrote about his struggles with PTSD on social media.
Mosher wrote on his Facebook page that he had a couple of
close calls with death when he was young, "but it wasn't until my last four
months in the Marine Corps Infantry (while securing Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in
2004) that death seriously made me question whether or not there is life after
death." He stated that he found it difficult to transition back into civilian
life, but was eventually introduced to salvia divinorum, a psychoactive plant
from Mexico that can produce a hallucinogenic high. "This information kicked off
a four-year quest of self-healing and opening up a much broader view of reality
using a variety of entheogenic substances," Mosher wrote. Mosher apparently
created two videos with psychedelic art that he posted on his YouTube account.
He also spoke about experimenting with mind-altering drugs in an interview with
EntheoRadio, and wrote about his "spiritual" journeys on YouTube and in an
illustrated 114-page book.
Mosher graduated from HVCC with a degree in individual
studies in 2006, and received a certificate from the college's digital media
program in 2012. Kyra Garrigue, digital media instructor at HVCC, said Wednesday
that Mosher spoke openly in class about his experiences in the military and
desire to help other veterans with PTSD.
"I am greatly saddened to hear of the passing of my former
student," Garrigue said. "Stewart was a warm and sincere student who easily
engaged with his peers. He brought a unique perspective to class discussions and
his sense of humor will be greatly missed."
Mosher had experienced hard times by 2013 and became
homeless, according to David Poach, admissions director at the Capital City
Rescue Mission. Mosher stayed in the shelter on South Pearl Street for a couple
of weeks starting in July, Poach said. The shelter helped Mosher line up housing
through the VA on Dec. 27, 2013, Poach said, adding that he never heard from the
vet again.
"We're heartbroken this happened," he said.
Mosher is survived by his parents, three siblings and others.
A calling hour at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Wenk Funeral Home in Chatham will be
followed by a 2 p.m. memorial service. Donations in memory of Mosher should be
made to the Capital City Rescue Mission.

Bay Pines, FL/New Lebanon, NY – William J. Schell, age 103, died June 25, 2020 at Bay Pines Veterans Hospital, Bay Pines, Florida after 6 days of battling COVID-19 pneumonia. He was born in New Lebanon, NY, one of 9 children. He owned and operated Schell’s General Store for over 50 years. His father worked for the Tilden Pharmaceutical Company.
William J. Schell is survived by his daughter Dr. Catherine L. Schell and her husband Dr. Richard Rathe; foster daughter Gale Hendrickson and her husband Mel and their children and grandchildren; son-in-law Rick Hindman; niece Dorothy Marcus, niece’s sister’s children Mike Williams, and Tina Triola; nieces Rosemary Schell; Lynne (Schell) Corfield; Anne Luttrell; Pat Schell; Jennifer Wyatt; Patty Anne Schell; Barbara (Schell) Rowan and husband with their two children, Mike and Mat Rowan. His wife Carol and his daughter Elizabeth preceded his death.
William J. Schell (Bub or Bud) graduated from New Lebanon Central School on June 14, 1935, with a prize for 12 years of perfect attendance. He was active in baseball club throughout his school years and continued to play in a minor league. He served in World War II as part of the United States Army Air Corps from April 18,1941 to December 1945 (S- SGT-AAF1252). After severe injuries that landed him in several Army hospitals, he returned to duty to serve until the war’s end. He served as a flight engineer, an airplane mechanic, and later as an airplane inspector. The Army Air Corps awarded him recognition medals for Outstanding Good Conduct, American Defense Service, WWII Victory and European- African-Middle East Service. After the war he returned home to work at General Electric in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. There he met his wife Carol Richards of Dalton, MA. He attended Hudson Valley Tech on the GI bill and with this education they started their own heating and air business that grew to include a general store. Their store became a center of social networking for many in the surrounding communities. It also became a place for summer employment for students from Lebanon, Berlin and other area schools. Not only did Mr. Schell run a successful store and heating business, he also bought the enormous junk yard of nearby East Nassau, NY. With his own finances and vision, he turned this town’s junk yard into a beautiful park and campground called Timber-Vale. He and Carol operated the park for twenty years featuring fishing, swimming, picnicking and walks along Kinderhook Creek.
About the age of 75 Mr. Schell and his wife Carol retired after selling their businesses and moved to their winter home in St. Pete Beach, Florida to be near Carol’s sister. Mr. Schell became active in an investment club and enjoyed many days of fishing and boating in the Gulf of Mexico. Bud will always be a part of Lebanon’s heart and history. Since he missed seeing the autumn colors of upstate NY, the family hopes to have a public burial service at the Cemetery of the Evergreens by Fall.

Volleyball coach’s death reminds teams of lessons learned on and off court
By Lisa D. Connell,
NEW LEBANON — From helping young volleyball players reach athletic heights and capture league championships to remembering the residents of her hometown, Maura O. Stouter’s legacy of community thoughtfulness and service endures.
After a year-long battle with cancer, Stouter died on June 11 at her family home in New Lebanon at age 63. Born and bred in New Lebanon, Stouter graduated from New Lebanon School District in 1966 and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from SUNY Cortland in 1970. In 1975, she completed all requirements for a master’s degree in physical education from SUNY Stony Brook.
Along the way, she led the girls volleyball teams in Smithtown, on Long Island, to many championship seasons.
“Maura was a retired Physical Education teacher/volleyball coach who taught in our Smithtown School District for over 30 years,” stated a blog on that school’s website. “She was the founder and creator of the Smithtown Volleyball Program. Maura lovingly has passed on the passion of Smithtown Volleyball to both high schools giving Deron Brown and George Alemia the reigns to the volleyball programs at High School West and High School East respectively.”
She won numerous awards for her coaching abilities and was widely respected by her colleagues.
Upon her retirement and return to New Lebanon, she never waned from her mission to teach and mentor.
The New Lebanon boys volleyball team was her next challenge.
“That was really a new level of success for that sport for our school,” said New Lebanon Central School Superintendent Karen McGraw.
“She returned to her hometown and basically wanted to give back,” McGraw said. “She chose the boys volleyball as the place she wanted to do it. She wanted to give back and gave back in a way appropriate to her skill and background.”
She was unable to serve in this capacity this past year due to her illness.
“Our players, under the direction of coaches Lenny Brown and Leilani Hover, dedicated last year’s Central Hudson Valley League championship season to her,” Matt Klafehn, assistant principal and athletic director at New Lebanon, wrote in an email. “This winter, she was honored by the team at the Winter Sports Banquet and was present not only to receive a signed volleyball from her boys, but to take the podium to say a few words about how proud she was of each of them and their accomplishments. Pictures from the event, the volleyball and video of her acceptance of her award were proudly displayed at Maura’s calling hours. Several of her players were present, as they had been throughout her illness, as Maura undoubtedly had a very positive impact on their lives. She will be greatly missed.”
The school board accepted a donation of a popcorn machine from her estate earlier this month.
“I am certain that this will be an outstanding addition to the plethora of baked goods that our boosters sell at our athletic contest,” Klafehn noted.
Stouter’s legacy of teaching and inspiring her students to set high goals and reach them remains.
“She was thinking about the kids right up to the end,” McGraw said.

Wilska, Albert Emil [Published February 15, 2012 online in the Chatham Courier section of the Register-Star, Hudson, NY.]
Albert Emil Wilska, a lifelong resident of Old Chatham, New York, died at the Providence Care Center in Lenox, Massachusetts on January 25, 2012, one day after his 93rd birthday. The son of Paavo (Paul) and Emma Wilska, he was a member of the first class to graduate from the present New Lebanon High School. He went on to earn an Associates Degree in Agriculture from Cornell University prior to enlisting in the Army Air Corps, where he served as a pilot and aircraft mechanic in China during World War II.
After the war, he became a partner with his brother John in Paulsons Inc., a homebuilding business in West Springfield, Massachusetts. A master carpenter and proud 50-year member of Local Union 370 at the time of his death, Albert worked for many years on the Empire State Plaza and SUNY Albany construction projects.
He is survived by his sister, Julia Wilska West, of Lake Worth, Florida; his brothers Elmer, Wilho, John and Henry died previously. A bachelor all his life, he also leaves four nieces (Sharon, Charlene, Judy and Leslie) and four nephews (Jon, Eric, Paul and Peter) and their families, who were an important part of his long life.
A graveside memorial service will be held in May at the Rayville Friends Burial Ground, for which Albert served as a Board member for many years. Donations in his memory will be gratefully received by the Board.
Albert was a man who loved the land and loved to work and at age 85 could still be seen on a tractor, mowing the fields he knew so well, on the farm where he grew up. He was always proud of his Finnish heritage and had, until the very end, an abundance of that quiet courage and strength of purpose known to Finns as sisu.

Note: As of
August 2020, Ancestry has four NLCS yearbooks online. They are:
1980, 1981,
1985, and 1988.
Note: I
examined class years of 1950-1990 on old-friends.co. I added many
deaths to their site, but I got no new deceased graduates from their
website. I could not find obituaries for any of the graduates who were
reported as deceased, but unverified.
There is a second NLCS website on Old Friends. I
checked 1950-2000. I reported several as deceased. They had zero
deceased.
