Phelps, Allen Eber

[Published July 4, 1950 in Berkshire Eagle,
Pittsfield, MA]
A. E. Phelps Dies at Wheel Of School Bus in Valley
LEBANON SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The sudden death yesterday afternoon of Allen Eber
Phelps, 66, one of the best-known men in town, came as a shock to area
residents. Mr. Phelps was stricken with a heart attack about 3.50 [sic] while
operating a New Lebanon Central School bus at New Lebanon Center and was dead
when a physician arrived. Coroner Lawrence J. Andrews of Chatham viewed the body
and gave a verdict of death due to natural causes.
Mr. Phelps, a bus driver for the past two years, had stopped the vehicle in
front of the home of Harold T. Lunde to discharge some of the pupils and had
just started toward the main highway when he was stricken. The bus, with 30
children still aboard, traveled about 40 feet and struck a tree on the left side
of the road. Mrs. Lunde heard the crash, went to the bus and after seeing the
condition of the driver summoned Dr. F. J. Lancaster who was soon on the scene.
None of the children were injured in the crash as the bus was going at a slow
speed. They were taken to their homes in another bus.
Mr. Phelps was born May 14, 1883, in Stephentown, the son of Nathan and Alice
Moffitt Phelps, and resided in this area all his life. Prior to coming here 26
years ago he resided in Hancock where he served as auditor for a time. He was
Republican supervisor of New Lebanon from 1931 to 1945 and 10 years of that time
he was chairman of the Columbia County Board of Supervisors. In 1944 he was
appointed chairman of the law and legislation committee of the Town Officers'
Association of New York. Since he left the political field Mr. Phelps devoted
his time to farming and maintained a small herd of cattle.
A member of the First Baptist Church for approximately 50 years, he was a deacon
of the church for 25 years. In addition, he was Sunday school superintendent
about 40 years. He was a past master of Unity Lodge of Masons and at the time of
his death was serving as its treasurer. He was re-elected to the latter post two
weeks ago and was to have been installed at last night's ceremony when his
son-in-law, Herbert M. Lasch, was installed as master. Mr. Phelps was also a
member of Lebanon Chapter, R.A.M., Chatham.
Survivors include his widow, Bessie Ostrander Phelps; two sisters, Mrs. Arthur
Carlton of this town and Mrs. Amy Kingdon of Delmar; two daughters, Mrs. Raymond
Fancher and Mrs. Herbert Lasch, both of this town; a son, Allen E. Jr., and
several grandchildren.
The body will rest at the Wellington Funeral Home, Pittsfield, until Friday
morning when it will be removed to the Lebanon Springs Baptist Church at 11
where it will lie in state until the hour of the funeral at 2. Rev. John
C. Hatch, pastor, assisted by Rev. Raymond Gibson, pastor of the New Lebanon
Congregational Church, will officiate. Unity Lodge of Masons will conduct
a Masonic service at the grave.
Members of the family will meet friends at the funeral home tonight and tomorrow
evening from 7 to 9.

Sherwood, Bruce Teed

[Published Saturday May 6, 1995 in the Portland Press Herald,

Bruce T. Sherwood, 60,
former director of the Victoria Society of Maine and an expert on Victorian
restorations, died of a heart attack Wednesday in North Blenheim, N.Y.
Mr. Sherwood was director of the Victoria Society from
1991 until he retired last Friday. The society manages and gives tours of the
1859 Morse Mansion, also known as the Victorian Mansion, at 109 Danforth St. in
Portland.
During his tenure, Mr. Sherwood oversaw several major
restoration projects, most notably the dark stone sidewalk and granite fence
that surround the mansion.
''He was extremely intelligent,'' said Corinne
Cartwright, secretary to the director at the museum. ''He took pride in
restoring the mansion.''
''He was a consummate museum director,'' said Robert
Crane, president of the Victorian Society. ''He knew all there was to know about
the decorative arts, and restoration and preservation. Whatever needed to be
done at the mansion, he knew exactly how to do it.''
Friends said that he directed his efforts at
stabilizing the mansion and keeping it from deteriorating, and that he
generously shared his knowledge with residents who were doing Victorian
restorations.
Mr. Sherwood had restored his own Victorian homes in
the past, and had done mansion restorations in other parts of the country. He
oversaw the restoration of the Hermitage, the historic home of President Andrew
Jackson near Nashville, Tenn.
Before coming to Maine, he was a staff member of H.F.
DuPont Winterthur museum and gardens in Winterthur, Del. At Winterthur he
oversaw education of the 92 full-time and 800 part-time guides at the giant H.F.
DuPont mansion. He introduced foreign language tours of the DuPont collections.
Mr. Sherwood lectured widely at colleges and
universities, and wrote many articles on historic preservation. He was a
professor of history and design at New York State University, and later was an
adjunct professor of architecture and history at the University of Delaware.
Mr. Sherwood was a former director of Hay House, a
Victorian museum and national historic landmark in Macon, Ga., and a former
director of the Orlando (Fla.) Historic Preservation Commission.
He had bachelor's and master's degrees from Cornell
University in Ithaca, N.Y.
Born in Canada, he was a son of Frederick and
Evangeline T. Sherwood. His parents died when he was a child, and he was brought
up by his aunt, Lena J. Niles. He grew up and attended schools in Trout Creek,
N.Y., and later in Smyrna, N.Y.
''He was a very kind person, and very much
family-minded,'' said his cousin's wife, Rosemary Niles. ''We appreciated him
very much.''
Surviving are two cousins, John Niles and Eva Niles,
both of West Edmensten, N.Y.
A graveside service and burial will be held next week
in Trout Creek. Arrangements are by Palmer and Shayler Funeral Home, Middleburg,
N.Y.

Charles Traver, 69, teacher, genealogist
ALBANY
-- Charles Spencer Traver passed away March 17, 2011 at Albany Medical
Center. He was born December 2, 1941, in Chatham, the son of Spencer
Charles Traver and Dorothy Tompkins Traver, both deceased.
He graduated from Chatham High School in 1960. After attending New
Paltz College, he taught for three years at New Lebanon Central School. Mr.
Traver obtained his master of science degree in education in 1967 from
Teacher’s College of Columbia University before entering the Peace Corps in
August of the same year. He served for three years on St. Vincent, an
island in the West Indies, where he was assigned to a teacher training
college. He returned to the United States in 1970.
He taught ninth and tenth grade social studies as well as Afro-Asian
cultures at Berne Knox Central School. Mr. Traver retired from teaching in
1980. He was revered by many of his students who still consider him their
mentor. He served as senior class advisor.
After retiring from teaching, Mr. Traver spent nearly 25 years working for
Northern Telecom, than a subsidiary of Bell Northern, headquartered in
Canada. Near the end of 1984, he was sent to Nortel’s training center
in Raleigh, NC, to be an instructor in the installation training department.
He later joined the Engineering Department of Nortel where he assisted in
the formulation of their training manuals. He bought a house and lived in
Raleigh for about 25 years. In recent years, Mr. Traver moved back to
Chatham to be near his family.
He was a more than avid genealogist. He spent most of his waking moments
researching loose ends to make family tree connections. His time spent
researching history made him many friends along the road visiting many
cemeteries as he passed, spending long research hours in library archives
while loving every new fact he unearthed. He has left an insurmountable
legacy for his family.
He is survived by: his brother, George Traver of Chatham; sisters, Marilyn
Fosby of Chatham, Dorothea Wheeler of Clifton Park, Barbara Sirani of Rye,
and Beth Barber of Hudson.
