Anthems at First Church (Reformed), Albany, NY
Scheduled for Singing in 2010
by Cliff Lamere Latest revision: 30 Sep 2010
The purpose of this webpage is to assist First Church choir members learn, in the comfort of your own home, the voice part of some of the Sunday anthems.
I have started a project to make a complete list of all of the First Church anthems, determine the number we have of each, locate videos of performances on YouTube, locate the websites of publishers and other sources which have audio files available for each anthem, determine which anthems have the voice parts played on Cyberbass, add audio files of the First Church choir singing these anthems at Sunday services, and find biographies and life dates of the composers.
This webpage is an offshoot of that project. The table of anthems below lists the Sunday service for which anthems are tentatively scheduled. For many reasons, the anthems planned for a particular Sunday may be moved to another week or replaced by a substitute anthem. I will try to keep up-to-date with the selections listed on the board in the choir room. Near the top of this webpage, the date of revision will follow my name. That will allow you to know how current the information is.
Ways to Prepare at Home
1) If you know that a video or audio file is available for an anthem (by checking this page ahead of time), you may want to take your music home after rehearsal.
2) Listen to the videos or audio files a few times.
3) If you have the sheet music at home, try to sing your part.
If you cannot hear your part, try a different video or audio file. If you have a piano, other musical instrument, or a pitch pipe at home, hearing the pitch of the first note will help you get started. You can hear your note or notes on a virtual piano (3 octaves beginning at lower C; letters, sharps, and flats are marked), or on an unmarked 5-octave piano.
A 2-octave keyboard (marked) and 3-octave keyboard (unmarked) are also online. These online pianos require various media software, so if one does not work, try another. The 36-note keyboard mentioned in this paragraph will allow you to record some notes as you play them in case you want to play back a difficult part.
Occasionally, a YouTube video will show the score of the music. I have marked those when they were found.
If I haven't found a video or audio file that is good for your voice part, you may be able to find a better one. If you do, let me know so that I can add a link for other choir members who sing your voice part.
Caution. The concert pitch may vary from one country or orchestra to another. The notes may not sound exactly the same as on your piano or other musical device.
